Intraday and interday volatility in the Japanese stock market

چکیده
This paper characterizes the volatility in the Japanese stock market based on a 4-year sample of 5-min Nikkei 225 returns from 1994 through 1997. The intradaily volatility exhibits a doubly U-shaped pattern associated with the opening and closing of the separate morning and afternoon trading sessions on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. This feature is consistent with market microstructure theories that emphasize the role of private and asymmetric information in the price formation process. Meanwhile, readily identifiable Japanese macroeconomic news announcements explain little of the day-to-day variation in the volatility, confirming previous findings for US equity markets. Furthermore, by appropriately filtering out the strong intradaily periodic pattern, the high-frequency returns reveal the existence of important long-memory interdaily volatility dependencies. This supports recent results stressing the importance of exploiting high-frequency intraday asset prices in the study of long-run volatility properties of asset returns. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Asymmetric Information, Perceived Risk and Trading Patterns: The Options Market
Asymmetric information models are tested using options implied volatility and volume of trade in eight international markets. We explore the relations between the trading break time duration, the quality of public information, the discretion of options liquidity traders to postpone their trades, and the interday and intraday implied volatility and volume of trade in options. Although asymmetric...
متن کاملIntraday Price and Volatility Spillovers between Japanese and Korean Stock Markets
This study investigates the intraday price and volatility spillover effect between the Japanese market and the Korean market, using a VAR-asymmetric BEKK GARCH model. In particular, the study considers three high-frequency (10-min, 30-min, and 1-hour) intraday datasets of TOPIX and KOSPI200 markets. The empirical results indicate a bi-directional price spillover effect in the 10-min intervals, ...

A developmental co-evolutionary genetic programming approach (PAM DGP) is compared to a standard linear genetic programming (LGP) implementation for trading of stocks in the technology sector. Both interday and intraday data for these stocks were analyzed, where both implementations were found to be impressively robust to market fluctuations while reacting efficiently to opportunities for profi...

متن کاملMarket Risk Models for Intraday Data
In this paper, we quantify market risk at an intraday time horizon using normal GARCH, Student GARCH, RiskMetrics and high-frequency duration (Log-ACD) models set in the framework of the conditional VaR methodology. Because of the small time horizon of the intraday returns (15 and 30 minute returns in this paper), an evaluation of intraday market risk can be useful to market participants (trade...
